Here’s the Precredit sequence of When It Was Simple I’m gonna hide most of it after the break althorugh there’s no spoilers.

EXT. MANTICORE- EARLY MORNING- ESTABLISHING SHOT
There are lots of evergreen trees, and plenty of snow on the ground.

Letting types across the screen: Manticore Facility, Gillette Wyoming, November 1997

As we move in we see a group of youth engaged in a forced fast march, they are not flanked by people with weapons, but their trainers are not afraid. They know that should any of their charges break formation, they will be shot, if needed with deadly accuracy. Puffs of breath mist the air; if you hadn’t got it it’s really damned cold.

One of the trainers with military grade white hair begins to quiz them as they continue at a brisk rate of speed. This is COLONEL LYDECKER.

COLONEL LYDECKER
Anyone care to tell me why we’re out here in the snow this morning?

No one answers for the moment they simply continue their exact pace, their feet crunching through the snow.

COLONEL LYDECKER
I want an answer!

The viewpoint changes to show the youth from the rear, they all sport barcodes and super-short hair. The only way to tell the sexes apart is to look at the details some finer than others, one of the female youth responds, her designation is X-5 452.

X-5 452
To test our durability Sir!

The Colonel looks over at the youth who had spoken, and nods slightly.

COLONEL LYDECKER
Good enough. However there is an even greater reason. Anyone care to guess?

Once again there is no response, Lydecker looks to the same youth.

COLONEL LYDECKER
452!

X-5 452
Because 449 failed Colonel!

They pick up the pace even as Lydecker responds.

COLONEL LYDECKER
Precisely soldier. You were designed to operate in adverse conditions such as this; therefore I couldn’t give two shits if you lost the majority of toes to frostbite.

X-5 GROUP
SIR, YES SIR!

COLONEL LYDECKER
You can be certain 5’s that I care for your continued health and wellness, your success reflects well on me. The longer you functions the more the 5 Series proves its worthiness, then the better off your lives will be. Is that clear!

X-5 GROUP
SIR, YES SIR!

COLONEL LYDECKER
Outstanding! 455, what is one of the things that 5 Series Exemplifies?

One of the young male X-5’s is quick to respond.

X-5 455
Excellence Sir!

COLONEL LYDECKER
Correct, anyone else!

A female X-5 calls out a response.

X-5 458
Extremes Sir!

COLONEL LYDECKER
Outstanding! Mark time!

The group begins to march in place; X-5 452 can’t help but smile when she realizes what they’re marching in.

X-5 452
Excrement Sir!

Lydecker looks down and grins despite himself.

COLONEL LYDECKER
And to think only us C.O.’s have boots on, pity that. Let’s speed up that mark time!

As they speed up their mark time we finally realize that the youth are barefoot.
COLONEL LYDECKER
I love the smell of manure in the morning!

  1. Could you possibly give us an approximate date by which the next episode will be posted? I’m enjoying this VS very much and don’t like the waiting :( (lol)

  2. I don’t like the waiting either.

Believe me there have been some very frustrating setbacks but I’m finally back and writing more When It Was Simple.
